“Did you have a good day?” Standing on my porch, watching me insert the key, Diego bit his upper lip nervously. “I feel like I made you do something you didn’t want to do.”

I thought back on the day—swimming with our dolphin, holding onto his dorsal fin, going for a short ride. Our dolphin wasn’t particularly feeling too sociable, which was perfect for me. Slow and steady wins the race. Afterwards, we ate lunch at the facility’s cafeteria out by the water, then drove up and down the islands on Diego’s scooter, soaking up the sun.

“No, it was great,” I assured him. “Seriously, don’t feel bad. This? What we did today? It was so good for me.”

He smiled, cranked back his elbows, and knocked an imaginary ball out of the park. “That is a wonderful thing to hear.”

“Yeah, it was.” I opened the door and nervously hovered there. What was one supposed to do after a date? A long time ago, a kiss would’ve been expected, but we were well into the 21st century now and the thought of kissing Diego both intrigued and terrified me.

What if he expected more?

What if I liked it?

What if my husband and son could see me from the other side?

What if that was just an excuse because the truth was, I’d never kissed anyone other than Daniel and part of me was scared I might want more? Was Diego even a good man to start over with? Wouldn’t starting a romantic situation now be a bit like going from the frying pan into the fire?

I smiled at Diego and took his hand, keeping my gaze down on it the whole time, because looking into his eyes would feel too intense.

“Hey. You don’t owe me anything, Reg. I had a nice time.” He sensed my hesitation and rubbed my knuckles with his thumb. “Okay?”

I nodded.

He wrapped both arms around me and gave me a nice hug. Not too deep, not creepy, just enough to let me know that he had a nice time today, that we were good no matter how fast or slow I wanted this to progress.

“How much do I owe you, at least? A dollar amount. I’m the one who called you.”

He shook his head. “It was nothing.”

“Don’t say that. Let me pay for part of it.”

He shook his head again. “I said no, woman.”

“But I’ll feel like I owe you.” I cocked my head. “And you said I don’t owe you.”

“That…” He pointed at me, raising his eyebrows. “Is not going to work.”

“Fine. I’ll buy ice cream from you then, next time I see you,” I said.

“Fair enough. I’ll see you soon.” He backed away and hopped down the steps. “Which, by the way, might be once or twice a week from now on. More clients on the way.” He waved.

I watched him stroll over to his scooter, start it up, and drive down the street as the sun started going down. I let out the biggest sigh. I might’ve resisted Diego today, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to resist him for long.
